The Challenge

A leading US insurance company ($3B+) was seeking a solution to secure their file portals against zero-day file-based threats.

To file claims and to comply with Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, the organization requires customers to upload proof of identity and other documentation via file portals integrated with SMS and other software applications.

This presented their security team with a challenge. The business depends on the file upload function for day-to-day business operations with its customers, including safely handling image files and forms from mobile devices. However, this function provides bad actors with an attack vector that can be used to target the organization with malicious content.

To further compound the problem, their existing detection-based anti-virus deployments could only protect against threats they had previously observed – limiting their capability to effectively protect portals against the dangers of complex and zero-day attacks.

The Solution

The insurance company engaged with Glasswall with the aim of implementing a zero-trust security solution. The remit was to integrate Glasswall’s Zero Trust Content Disarm and Reconstruction (CDR) technology with existing workflows to secure their file portals against file-based threats in unknown files.

Glasswall Zero Trust CDR doesn’t rely on the detection of ‘known’ threats. Instead, it works by proactively looking for ‘known good’. Glasswall Halo inspects, cleans and rebuilds files - automatically removing potential threats via a process that takes place in real-time and providing protection against new, existing and complex file-based threats.

Glasswall engaged in a proof-of-concept exercise to demonstrate Halo’s effectiveness in this use case. Halo was integrated, via API endpoints, with an existing SMS tool and file portal, and testing was conducted. Upon reviewing the results of the POC, the insurance company awarded Glasswall with the contract of work.

The Outcome

The insurance company implemented Glasswall CDR into their file portal workflow – allowing them to gain comprehensive protection against even the most sophisticated file-based threats. With the use of API endpoints, the implementation was completed without altering business-critical workflows or applications – minimising business impact and maximising file-based threat protection. The end user now receives safe, clean and fully functioning files instantly, with no impact on document functionality or formatting.

Their security teams are also empowered by data – with Halo providing real-time threat intelligence data, and transparent reporting
